Here we go with another list of Christmas words starting with the letter J in hopes to increase our Christmas vocabulary. This letter of the alphabet was a test because I had to get a little creative in finding the right words searching other countries for words they use during the christmas season. As I‘ve been doing these lists I am learning how others celebrate this special time of year and hope these J letter words do the same for you. 

Jack Frost

A Norse Demi-god called Jokul Frosti which means icicle frost. 

This is also a 1998 Christmas movie about a father who dies in a car accident and comes back as a snowman.

Jack Skellington

The main character in the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Jack-in-the-box

A classic toy that was often given as a Christmas gift. In Rudolph they change it to a Charlie in the box because no one wants a Charlie in the box.

Jacket

Santa’s jacket is red and white velvet or fur.

Jacob Marley

The deceased business partner of Scrooge in the Christmas story “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Having been turned into some of the greatest Tv “Christmas special” movies, this story is what the christmas spirit is all about.

Jam

Often found in gift baskets or given as a gift when homemade. 

Jamboree

A Christmas jamboree is a large lavish party.

Jansson’s Temptation

A Swedish casserole made of potatoes often included in a julbord.

Jellied veal

A Swedish cold cut dish that is a part of the Julbord somethings served sliced on Crisp bread.

Jelly

Cranberry Jelly to be specific. Over half of Americans say it’s a must have with a holiday meal.

Jerusalem

The place that Jesus died and was resurrected.

Jesus Christ

Born in Bethlehem, the son of God is the whole reason we celebrate Christmas. The birth of Jesus was probably the most significant thing to happen in the history of man kind. Because of it we have 

Jewelry

25% of women and 17% of men would be happy to receive jewelry as a gift according to a survey done by Statista from 2022.

Jiminy Cricket

The ghost of Christmas past in the Disney’s Mickey version of A Christmas Carol.

Jingle All The Way

This 1996 movie is about a father vowing to get his son the toy he wants, a Turbo Man action figure, staring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Jingle Bell Rock

A song sung by Bobby Helms famously in Home Alone 2. 

Jingle Bells

This Christmas Song is one of the most popular having been sung by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Bing , Micheal Bublé, the Penatonix & many more.

Jødekager

A Danish butter cookie that is easy to make.

John McClain

The main character in the Die Hard franchise. This has been up for debate if it’s a Christmas movie or not. It has a Christmas lights & Christmas tree, they say Ho Ho Ho, number 1 & 2 are both around Christmas, and you hear Christmas music sung or played. I say if it’s one that you watch every Christmas since you were a kid then it is a Christmas movie and these are on my list..

Jólakötturinn

Another Christmas character that punishes naughty kids. This Icelandic man-eating Yule Cat is said wonder the snowy landscape the night before Christmas and eat children who didn’t do their chores.

Jólasveinn

The Icelandic name for Santa Claus

Joleøl

A Norwegian spiced Christmas beer. 

Jolly

A common way of describing Santa and his cheerfulness.

Jolly old St Nick

One way people Say Saint Nicholas and it’s also a great Christmas carols.

Joulupöytä

An assortment of food served at Christmas in Finland. 

Joulupukki

Means Christmas Goat or Yule Goat in Finnish. Over time its been combined with Santa. 

Joulutorttu

A Finnish Christmas tart topped with prune jam folded in the shape of a pinwheel.

Journey

The Journey that the 3 wise men or biblical Magi went on to give baby Jesus the 3 gifts. There is also the journey that Santa travels as he delivers all the presents to gods little boys and girls. As a society we travel a lot during Christmas as we visit loved ones. 

Jovial

Cheerful and Friendly.

Joyeux Noël

French for Merry Christmas or Happy Christmas.

Joy

Home Decor Snowman as the O in JOY on fake snow and a fake tree

Joy to the world is an English Christmas Carol written in 1719 by Isaac Watts.

Joyful

People are most joyful around Christmas time. 

Jubilant

Every Christmas we are jubilant, express great happiness. 

Julafton

Christmas Eve in Sweden

Julbord

Julebrus or Jolebrus

A Norwegian Soft drink with a sweet raspberry taste the name means Christmas Soda in English. It is brewed in a brewery.

Julefrokost

Danish for Christmas Lunch, even though it is an all day meal. The meal consists of a fish usually pickled herring. A meat course like curried meatballs, duck, or pork. For dessert they have Ris a l’amande, a cold rice pudding. 

Julemanden

The Danish equivalent of Father Christmas. 

Julenissen

Norways Christmas Gnome is their equivalent to Santa Claus

Julgubben

Swedish for Santa Claus or Father Christmas

Julmust

A Swedish soft drink often consumed during Christmas. 

Julskinka

The holiday ham that is the center piece to the Julbord.

Ok, it doesn’t start with the letter J, but it is in the shape of the letter J.

As you can see there are a lot of Christmas words that start with the letter J. I hope these Christmas-related words has increased your vocabulary this holiday season.
