From charity that reminds us to give back, to celebrations that bring us together, these words remind us of the universal joys of Christmastime. Whether it’s cozying up with hot chocolate or decorating a Christmas tree, each culture adds its own unique twist to make the season bright. So let’s explore these festive words, each one carrying its own special piece of Christmas cheer!

We have to start the list of with what this whole list is all about. The first recorded Christmas was on December 25, 336 AD. You can find more about it on Britannica.

Candy / Candy cane

One of the most iconic Christmas movies has to be “A Christmas Story.” The leg lamp, the beating up of the school bully, to one of the most iconic movie lines ever “You’ll shoot your eye out kid.”

Cookies

Baking cookies is a holiday tradition, often left out for Santa or shared among friends and family.

Cranberry

Cranberries are intertwined with both Thanksgiving and Christmas due to their harvest being later in the year. They are used in holiday beverages, stuffing or dressing, and most commonly cranberry sauce. 

Cranberry sauce is a popular side dish in the U.S. First used in the United States for Thanksgiving but by 1942 it became a standard part of Christmas dinner. 

Cupid, Comet

Some know them as reindeer that play games. An iconic part of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

Cadeau / Cadeautjes

In Dutch these are gifts, which are exchanged to show love and appreciation during Christmas, much like in other cultures.

Carillon

Bell chimes are a familiar sound in Dutch cities around Christmas, giving a festive air and often heard from church towers.

Chocolademelk

A cozy drink perfect for the cold, hot chocolate is a comforting staple, especially enjoyed at Christmas markets.

Chocolate letters are a Dutch holiday treat often associated with Sinterklaas but also enjoyed during Christmas.

St. Christopher is a saint sometimes mentioned in Christmas prayers, especially for travelers heading to see family.
