I’ve been doing a holiday word list of Christmas words, with explantation, that start with each letter of the alphabet. This time it’s the letter L. This letter is so far the largest and most comprehensive Christmas word lists I’ve done so far. So without any more hesitation lets get into it. 

La

As in Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.

Ladies Dancing

12 ladies dancing is one of the 12 days from the 12 days of Christmas song.

Lamb

Lamb is a common Christmas dinner, if you want to splurge. A lamb also has a religious meaning. In Christianity the lamb represents Christ. 

Lamprey Pie

A pastry from medieval England made from lamprey’s. In Gloucester it was traditionally given to the monarch at Christmas. Lamprey’s are a jawless fish found in both saltwater and freshwater.

Lantern

Christmas lanterns of all kinds are big in Christmas decorations. Traditional lanterns, commonly seeing held by Saint Nicholas  in paintings, are stuffed with some ornaments like bulbs. The other lantern is the Philippine Christmas lantern called a parol. Not a traditional looking lantern but more of a star. They represent the star of Bethlehem that guided the 3 wise men to the manger. 

Lanttulaatikko

A rutabaga casserole that is a traditional Christmas dish of Finland.

Lap

Children Sitting on the lap of Santa Claus dates back as far as the 1890’s.

Last minute Shoppers notoriously husbands shopping for their wives.

Also know as leaf bread or snowflake bread is a traditional bread eaten during the Christmas season in Iceland. 

Laughter

Laughter is common during the festive season when surrounded by family members. 

Leave

Santa’s half eaten cookie and milk in the red glow of a Christmas tree

Children in the U.S. leaving cookies and milk out for santa. In the UK they leave Sherry and mince pie, while in Ireland they leave Guinness with their mince pie. In Germany kids leave a letter for santa, in Sweden the leave coffee which I’m sure gets him to stay awake up until Christmas day. 

Lebkuchen

A honey-sweetened cake, bar cookie, or molded cookie that are a Christmas tradition in Germany. 

Leftovers

One of the best part of the Christmas dinner is that you get to eat it for days. 

Let

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow is one of the more popular Christmas songs sung by famous artist like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jessica Simpson, and Micheal Bublé.

Letter

Writing a letter to Santa Claus is a Christmas tradition. Dating as far back as 1895 a little girl requesting a paint set from Santa. If your kids want to write to santa they can and you can help. Have your kids write a letter to santa and adress it to the North Pole and you can add a letter from santa to your kids and send them in an envelope to:

Leyland Cypress

The Leyland Cypress Christmas Tree is the most popular Christmas tree in the southeast U.S. If you are allergic to tree sap like on pine tree’s or fir tree’s you are in luck as this tree has no sap.

Libation

Alcoholic drinks often served during the holiday‘s. 

Limpa

This sweet rye-bread is a Christmas Eve tradition of Scandinavia. 

Lincoln

A famous president who who’s name inspired the famous toy Lincoln Logs. A toy that has been given as a Christmas toy for years. 

Linzer Torte

A traditional Austrian pastry named after the city of Linz often eaten at Christmas. 

Lionel

A famous brand of model trains that many have put around their Christmas tree.

Lights

Christmas lights are one of the most top christmas decorations Next to Christmas trees.

Lighting

The lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York is one of the most famous Christmas tree lightings. 

List 

Santa has a list of nice and naughty children. 

Little Donkey

A Children’s christmas carol about a Little Donkey written in 1959 by Eric Boswell.

Little Drummer Boy

A 1941 Christmas Carol of a little drummer boy to meets baby Jesus and play his drum for him as a gift. 

Little Ones

Our little ones allow us to live Christmas as a child again but this time we get to see it through their eyes. Honesty it’s one of the best ways to see it. 

Log

A Yule log or CHristmas log is a dessert and a tradition of burning a log or even up to a full tree in the fire.

Lord

The Lord Jesus is believed to be born on Christmas and is the son of God.

Lords

Ten Lords a Leaping is from the song 12 days of Christmas.

Lore

There is so much Christmas lore from Santa Claus, and Krampus, to Lutins and Gryla some are nice and some are evil. 

Love

The love we feel for family during these special times. 

Luminaria

Used to discribe different holiday lights.

Luminous

The shining Christmas lights.

Lump

A lump of Coal in the stocking for all the bad kids. 

Lush

Those family members at the holiday parties that are easily drunk and usually cause a scene. 

A large and lush Christmas tree is the preferred tree look except for those who love the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree. 

Lutefisk

A Norwegian whitefish that is dried, salted, and cured in lye. Prior to eating they soak in cold water for 4-6 days then they cook it.
