I love a good Easter egg hunt. Hiding those plastic Easter eggs, I mean the Easter bunny hiding all those eggs, all through the living room to see if the kids can find them all is so much fun. We’ve done so good at it we’ve even hid them where we can’t find them. Nothing like the kids finding eggs days or weeks later.
The problem is what do you stuff them with year after year without being repetitive. We have to mix it up or the kids will get suspicious. Besides, who wants to fill the eggs with the same thing they did last year? I know I don’t.
So, this year I plan on stuffing eggs with some new ideas as well as the ones that have been a huge hit over the years.
As a reminder please make sure the items you pick are age appropriate. Choking hazard and age warning for little kids are very important to observe. Also keep in mind any food allergies your kids of kids that are on the Easter hunt with your may have,
We do give candy because what is Easter without candy. I will say though we don’t let them eat much of it. A sugar overload with 3 kids is the equivalent of releasing the hounds of hell in my living room.
What I usually do is take a bunch to my coworkers because if I see it at home I’ll end up eating it all myself.
If you too don’t like your kids eating a ton of candy but don’t know what to do you could donate it to Operation ShoeBox. Operation shoebox is an organization that send the candy to the troops overseas. I can tell you as a veteran myself, little bits of home when your deployed is welcoming.
So lets see what small items we can stuff those little eggs with.
Traditional Treats
As for sweet treats some traditional and great ones are.
- Mini Kit Kats
- M&M’s
- Twix
- Snickers
- Hershey Kisses
- Mini chocolate eggs
- Cadbury eggs
- Chocolate bunnies
- Jelly Beans
Non-Traditional Treats
Some not so traditional candies but ones that fit the classic eggs are.
- Fruit Snacks
- Gold Fish
- Mini Pretzels
- Mini Boxes of raisins If you can get your kids to eat them
- Fruit leather rolled to fit eggs
Now we can’t only stuff the plastic eggs with candy and treats so what else is there.
Non-Candy Items
Non-candy items that work are ones that don’t break the bank but are not cheaply made either.
Small Toys
- Squishy Toys
- Lego Pieces
- Mini Dinosaurs
- Bouncy Balls
- Sticky hands toys
- Led finger lights
Kids Jewelry
- Light up rings
- Necklaces
- Rings
- Hair ties
- Bracelets
- Hair Scrunchies
- Temporary Tattoos
Money
Both coins and dollar bills are fun finds for little ones. Nothing like some coins for them to add to their piggy banks.
Craft Supplies
- Pencil Toppers
- Mini Easter shaped Erasers
- Stickers
- Easter Stamps
Play-doh (or Silly Putty)
If you can’t find mini packs that fit in your eggs you could alway pack the eggs with the play doh. Buying the prefilled eggs of play-doh is another option and I’ll tell you it’s much easier.
Tokens/Homemade Coupons
Fill the eggs with tokens or homemade coupons using small slips of paper and have them trade tokens or hand in the coupons for prizes, to get out of chores, have a pizza night, or pick the family movie. The ideas here are endless.
Egg Substitutes
Sometimes filling those eggs are a pain or you just want to add something new to your kids baskets.
Instead of plastic eggs you could get some of the following types of fun eggs
Dino Eggs
These Dino Eggs are cool I haven’t got them before but they are the least returned and a best seller.
I have got these Folding Dinosaur Unicorn Eggs as well as these Mystery Break Apart Dinosaur Eggs for the kids and they were a nice variation to plain filled plastic eggs.
Unicorn Eggs
Apart of the same pack of Folding Dinosaur Unicorn Eggs this combination is great if you have both boys and girls. That way no one gets jealous.
Chalk Eggs
Chalk Eggs are another substitute if your kids love that kind of thing. There are plenty of them to find online I just felt these ones are a better looking.
However there are some that are a better price so look around for ones that are within you budget.
Easter Matching Eggs
These eggs are a great Stem toy for the little egg hunters.
2 packs might be to many so you could team up with another family and split the cost to stretch you money a bit further.
Smasher Eggs
Smashers Dino Eggs like these are another fun surprise egg toy. I haven’t purchased these ones but have got some similar and my son loved them.
Bath Bombs
These Egg-shaped Bath Bombs are shaped like eggs and have a surprise inside. I don’t know about your kids but my kids love bath bomb especially ones with surprises inside.
Science Experiment Eggs
These Science Experiment Eggs are another stem toy and look awesome and hope to get them for the kids this year.
Play-Doh Eggs
You can’t go wrong with Play-doh. Trust me as a parent of 3 kids this stiff doesn’t stay separated into their individual color for long. Alas it will not stay soft that long either that is why it is one of those items we get every holiday.
EOS Lip Balm
Already shaped in an egg form EOS Lip Balm is good for the older kids. My daughter loved lip balms, and glosses.
Kinetic Sand Eggs
Kinetic Sand is another item that similar to Play-doh is a common item we get every holiday because it gets messy or lost in the carpet.
I will say if you are in a pinch and feel like you can’t pack them yourself they do sell prefilled eggs in Amazon.
Larger Then Traditional Eggs
In addition to the traditional eggs they also have mega and jumbo eggs.
The jumbo Easter eggs allow for much bigger toys and could be an addition to or replacement of the traditional Easter basket.
Fillers for those types of eggs are endless but some ideas are.
Bath Toys
Bath toys with holes in them should be replaced every 6 months or so due to mold. It’s past time to replace when you see the toys get darker, and when you squeeze the water out slime or black gunk comes out.
So get them fun bath toys to and if you can look for ones without the holes. Look for the ones that call out “Mold Free” bath toys.
Swimming Pool Toys
We are coming up on summer time and swim toys or equipment like arm floaties are always nice to have for the kids.
Smencils
If you don’t know what these are they are what they sound like scented pencils. These are a huge hit in my kids school.
Elmers DIY Squishies
We just got one of these for my son’s 6th birthday and he is over the moon excited to make his army of squishies and the bast past is you can use any Elmers glue so glow int eh dark glitter glue adds a little fun to it.It’s a mystery on what one gets made so it’s even more exciting for the kids.
After the hustle of Christmas, the lights and bright colors came Valentines and the bright reds. I love the transition to spring with Easter. The bunnies, greenery, and pastels are a relaxing break before the the summer vacation with the kids out of school lets make it even better with less stress.
I hope this was helpful, gives you some great ideas, and makes your Easter with the kids a little less stressful.
